New charter of rights for community care

Posted
by DPS

The Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot, has announced details of the Government’s new Charter of Rights and Responsibilities for Community Care which came into effect on 1 October.

It applies to more than 64,000 recipients of Commonwealth Government funded community care packages, plus the people who provide them with those services.

The charter applies to the three types of community care packages funded by the Rudd Government that help older Australians continue to live independently and in their own homes and communities including Community Aged Care Packages (CACPs), Extended Aged Care at Home (EACH) packages and Extended Aged Care at Home Dementia (EACH D) packages.

The Charter of Rights and Responsibilities for Community Care:

  • Outlines rights of recipients and care workers;
  • Gives older Australians a greater say in how services are provided to them;
  • Allows people to receive the type of care that is most appropriate for them and to receive safe and quality care at all times;
  • Allows recipients to have their complaints investigated fairly and confidentially; and
  • Provides care workers with the right to have a safe working environment.
