New assistance for radiology oncology and eye care in NT
The Federal Government has committed to providing $31.5 million to establish a Radiation Oncology Centre at the Royal Darwin Hospital. The new centre will mean that many Territorians will no longer need to travel interstate for cancer treatment.
The Commonwealth has also pledged $180,000 to employ an eye health manager through the Fred Hollows Foundation to be based at the Alice Springs Hospital. This should reduce the waiting time for eye surgery in central Australia and help build a sustainable system of eye health to address long-term the needs of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in central Australia. Blindness is 10 times more common in Indigenous communities than the rest of the population.
