A New South Wales government health agency is calling for volunteers for a pilot program aimed at reducing the pain of osteoarthritis and improving mobility and quality of life.
Co-chair of the Agency for Clinical Innovation Musculoskeletal Network, Lyn March, said it was looking for 300 participants at each of seven sites; these include – Fairfield/Macarthur/ Bowral, Gosford/Wyong, Nepean/Blue Mountains, Newcastle, Port Macquarie/Kempsey/Camden Haven, Sutherland/St George and Wollongong.
Each participant will be offered a tailored exercise and obesity management program and psychological assessment, matched to their lifestyle and overall health needs.
“The results of the pilot will then help to inform a state wide rollout,” Ms March said.
Osteoarthritis affects more than a quarter of all people over 65 years, and as the population ages and becomes increasingly overweight, the incidence is rising.
