New approach to people, learning and culture by UnitingCare Ageing

UnitingCare Ageing NSW/ACT has recruited Damian Byers, a former philosophy academic, to be its inaugural director of People, Learning and Culture.

In the new role, Mr Byers will oversee UnitingCare’s strategic workforce planning, human resource management and organisational development.

Damian Byers has previously worked for Fuji Xerox, AstraZeneca and BHP Biliton Iron Ore, as well as lecturing in philosophy at the University of Sydney for five years.

One of Mr Byer’s first objectives will be to develop standardised job descriptions and application processes across the organisation.

He is also keen to promote a ‘coaching culture’ to increase staff members’ skill levels by encouraging more ‘on the job learning’ and equipping line managers to support learning in the workplace.

Mr Byers said he was drawn by the “opportunity to do meaningful work” and an attraction to UnitingCare Ageing’s INSPIRE strategy, which sets out six strategic organisaitonal challenges for 2011.

He will be responsible for the fourth challenge, which outlines the organisation’s commitment to being an employer of choice with an adequate supply of skilled and motivated people.

UnitingCare Ageing said it is pleased to welcome Mr Byers to the role and it looks forward to the benefits of his expertise and knowledge.
