New ACT system trial for early detection of deterioration in a patient’s condition
A pilot project aimed at enhancing ACT Health’s ability to recognise at an early stage any signs of deterioration in a patient’s condition has been launched, to occur over a four month trial period.
Early recognition that a patient’s condition was deteriorating was essential if clinical risk was to be minimised, Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Health, Katy Gallagher, said. “Changes need to be observed and interpreted and the appropriate actions taken by nurses and doctors, and there are a series of steps that are undertaken to do this,” she said.
“We hope it will provide nurses and doctors with the tools and knowledge to recognise and manage any deterioration at an early stage and thus enhance patient outcomes.”
The pilot project will include the introduction of:
. Modified early warning scores
. A new observation chart
. The COMPASS education program, which has been designed and developed by members of the team: the program is interdisciplinary and consists of a self-directed CD and manual, an online quiz, and a three-hour face-to-face session.
