A Sutherland Shire medical researcher may have invented a natural remedy for Alzheimer’s disease.
The St George & Sutherland Shire Leader newspaper reports Maxwell Strong, 77, of Taren Point, is conducting a pilot study of the product, which contains a concentrated source of vegetable-derived soluble fibre and fruit-derived chemicals that may help prevent the progressive thinning of the brain’s cortex.
The cortex is responsible for memory, thinking ability, information processing and attention.
Studies have shown it is considerably thicker in elderly people who have experienced no decline in memory function.
Factors that contribute to cortical thinning include chronic low-level systemic inflammation, oxidative stress caused by a drop in the body’s ability to produce the principle antioxidant glutathione, and a drop in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a secreted protein that helps control brain plasticity (its recovery ability).
Dr Strong believes his product will help improve glutathione production and increase BDNF levels because the ingredients can pass from the blood to the brain.
Participants are needed for phase one of the pilot study, which will take about six to 12 months. Details: http://neurolex.com.au/
