National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Grants
In a break with tradition, the Prime Minister John Howard – rather than the Minister for Health – has announced the NHMRC health and medical research grants totaling $561.4 million.
$336.6 million has been awarded to 664 Project Grants beginning in 2008 for individuals and small research teams in
institutions across Australia.
Broad research areas covered are biomedical science, clinical medicine and science, health services research, preventative health and public health.
$106.1 million has been awarded to 12 Program Grants, to commence in 2008, for high calibre teams undertaking large scale collaborative research. Health issues covered by these grants include Type 1 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, glaucoma, genetic analysis of complex human diseases, the determinants of reproductive health and optimising health outcomes from clinical trials.
$50.4 million has been awarded for 88 Research Fellowships, with an average value of over $570,000, while $6.7 million has been awarded to 18 health professionals to allow them to maintain research as well as professional careers.
