National disability parking permit design endorsed

Posted
by DPS

Disability Ministers and Roads/Transport Ministers have endorsed a consistent national permit design for Disability Parking Schemes. The new Australian Disability Parking Permit will be rolled out nation-wide from 2010 to 900,000 current permit holders.

The national harmonisation of Disability Parking Schemes is a Federal Government election commitment that aims to provide nationally consistent accessible parking arrangements with reciprocal recognition of permits between jurisdictions for eligible people with a disability.

Harmonisation of the parking schemes has been proposed for permit design, eligibility criteria and permit concessions. The plan is based on Australia-wide public consultation and discussions between government and non-government representatives of all jurisdictions.

One national permit would:

  • be easier for parking enforcement officers to identify;
  • improve international recognition; and
  • incorporate additional security features that will make it harder for permits to be copied and tampered with.

Work will continue on the development of national minimum standards for parking concessions and the eligibility criteria under the Australian Disability Parking Scheme which is expected to be implemented by 2012.
