National Compact with the not for profit (NFP) sector
The Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) has reported to the Government that there is support for a National Compact as a framework for guiding Government and NFP sector relations, based on mutual respect and understanding, and mutual accountability.
The report was commissioned by the Government, and it held 16 forums around Australia between July and October, and received 60 submissions.
It found that nearly all groups consulted viewed the aims of a Compact as relevant to their activities and supported further dialogue with the Government.
The Government, through Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin, has said that it wants a more robust and creative relationship with the sector.
“This is critical to getting things done in key areas like reducing homelessness or closing the gap in indigenous life outcomes,” she said.
The next phase of the work will start early in 2009. The report is available at www.facsia.gov.au/internet/facsinternet.nsf/communities/australian_compact.htm
