More than ‘just a meal’

National Meals on Wheels Day was marked recently to celebrate the valuable community contribution of more than 80,000 Meals on Wheels volunteers across Australia.

Meals on Wheels has helped frail and elderly people – and those with disabilities – in the home for more than 50 years by delivering hot meals to their door.

The not-for-profit organisation this year delivered more than 14.8 million meals to more than 50,000 meal recipients Australia wide in cities, as well as regional and rural areas.

Australian Meals on Wheels Association president, Ron Welsh, said: “The day was about recognising the efforts of volunteers. I can’t praise highly enough our volunteers; many of whom have been with their local services for years – even decades.”

“Not only do Meals on Wheels volunteers provide a nutritious meal to our valued clients, but they also provide an important community connection through calling at homes each day to provide a cheery welcome, daily contact and monitor their wellbeing.

“The Meals on Wheels service is truly ‘more than just a meal’,” he added.

The theme for National Meals on Wheels Day this year was ‘hydration’, which reminded clients across Australia to drink sufficient fluids to keep themselves adequately hydrated.

More than 700 branches, kitchens and services across the nation marked the occasion with celebrations including volunteer ‘thank you’ barbecues, special meals and extra treats for clients.

Meals on Wheels is seeking new clients and volunteers who may contribute as little as just a few hours a fortnight. Visit www.mealsonwheels.org.au for more information on volunteering.
