Melbourne family stops an 82-year old’s licence

A

Melbourne
family has said they would take an 82-year-old driver’s licence away from him, after the driver accidentally ran into two young children at a suburban pedestrian crossing.

A six year-old boy was in a serious but stable condition in the Royal Children’s Hospital and his three-year-old sister was in a stable condition, after the accident in Sydney Road at 5.30pm last Sunday.

The driver, Guiseppe Citino, was in shock after the accident and his son-in-law, Dominic, apologised and said the family would take the driver’s licence from him.

“We hope with all our hearts the kids come out 100% and have no future problems and live normal lives” Dominic told the Herald Sun newspaper.

The latest Victorian figures show that about a quarter of the state’s drivers are senior citizens, and more than 100,000 motorists are over 80.

VicRoads director of road user safety, David Shelton, said, “Victoria’s licensing policy is based on a person’s driving capability.

“That is, that people can drive to any age as long as they are safe to do so.”
