Meals on Wheels volunteers honoured

Last week, Queensland Disability Services Minister, Annastacia Palaszczuk, paid tribute to Inala Meals on Wheels volunteers ahead of National Meals on Wheels Day today.

Ms Palaszczuk and Richlands Councillor, Milton Dick, presented certificates to past and present volunteers for their service to the local community.

“Meals on Wheels staff and volunteers are selfless individuals, sacrificing their own time to improve the lives of their fellow Queenslanders,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“They’re the backbone of communities across the state, delivering vital services to thousands of Queenslanders every day.

Ms Palaszczuk said Meals on Wheels was one of the best known and loved community organisations in Australia.

“I want to encourage more Queenslanders to contribute to their local community by volunteering at their local Meals on Wheels.”

Ms Palaszczuk said Inala Meals on Wheels received $36,750 in meal subsidies from the State-Commonwealth Home and Community Care program in 2009-10.

“Inala Meals on Wheels staff and volunteers are part of an extremely hard working team,” Councillor Dick said.

“They’re reaching out into the heart of the community, delivering over 15,000 meals to local residents every year. I want to pay tribute to their dedication and commitment, and the positive contribution they make to the lives of local residents.

“Meals on Wheels volunteers are providing thousands of Queenslanders with more than just a meal – they’re also a friendly face.

“With the Commonwealth, we provide $5.5 million a year to help Meals on Wheels deliver more than two million meals in Queensland every year.”
