Massage Therapy Week 2-8 September
Massage Therapy Week is an initiative of the Australian Association of Massage Therapists.
The Association says massage can be used to treat many of the typical conditions that can arise with age such as arthritis, muscle and bone deterioration, tendonitis and bursitis.
Research has indicated that massage and touch may be effective as alternative therapies for the management of behavioural, emotional and perhaps other conditions associated with dementia and it has long been associated with pain relief.
A study conducted by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s School of Nursing in 2004 also found that slow-stroke back massage “is an effective nursing intervention for reducing shoulder pain and anxiety in elderly patients with stroke”.
