Macular degeneration funding
The Federal Government announced that it will provide $457,600 over three years to the Macular Degeneration Foundation National Education and Awareness Project, starting July.
The project is aimed at educating at risk groups about detecting the disease early and reducing risks in order to prevent vision loss.
Early detection of macular degeneration is vital in order to save sight. As well as people who have macular degeneration, those who are most at risk are:
- the families of people with macular degeneration;
- people over 50 years of age and particularly those who are over 70; and
- smokers and ex-smokers.
The Macular Degeneration Foundation National Education and Awareness Project will continue to run community-based education sessions. It will produce and distribute consumer information material and translate it for culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
