Residents at Victorian aged care provider, Lifeview, shone like stars after putting their dancing shoes on as they busted a move or two last week.

Surprising the residents and joining in at Lifeview’s The Willows home in Wheelers Hill was Channel Seven’s Dancing with the Stars dancer Melanie Hooper, who was the dance partner of Australian rock music singer and actor Brian Mannix.

Lifeview’s events and marketing executive, Katrina Andrews, spoke to DPS News after Ms Hooper’s surprise dance class.

“It was a bit of a surprise for residents as they often watch Dancing with the Stars in the living room. They all looked so excited,” Ms Andrews said.

“Melanie did a few poses and dance moves in full costume with the residents who were cheering and clapping. It was wonderful because it brought back memories of some of the residents who would dance with their partners.”

Ms Hooper is pictured in full dancing attire with a Lifeview resident last week.

According to Ms Andrews, social support and including entertainment in the residents’ lifestyle program was important.

“Lifeview’s motto is ‘live the possibility’. We want to change the persona around aged care and allow people entering a nursing home to understand it is not the end of the road.”

Lifeview’s annual positive ageing celebration event this year is a spin-off of Channel Seven’s Australia Got Talent. Residents are now busy practising their routines for their October ‘Lifeview’s Got Talent’ performances, which will include dancing, singing,  comedy and group acts.

“It’s important to keep the minds and bodies of residents active and to encourage them to take on the belief that aged care is not all ‘doom and gloom’. They can meet new friends and it can become a very social, family environment,” Ms Andrews says.
