Leeton unites to keep aged care facility
The Leeton Irrigator newspaper in New South Wales has reported that Carramar residents, their families and carers, as well as staff are fighting to keep the aged care facility in Leeton, NSW, from being privatised.
Planning has been finalised by the state government to allow for expressions of interest to purchase the Leeton aged care service.
President of the Carramar residents committee, Neil Boardman said Carramar belonged to the community and the state government should not be allowed to take it without a fight.
“The most critical thing is ensuring that everything stays as it already is,” he said.
“If we can change the government’s minds and hold onto everything we already have, then that will be the best outcome.
“If through the privatisation the beds were to be moved to a new facility then the effect on the hospital could also be devastating. There’s a lot at stake here.”
Leeton Shire Council has the option of purchasing Carramar if and when the privatisation process does go ahead.
