Launch of Christopher Newell Prize

The Christopher Newell Prize was launched by Bill Shorten, Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Children’s Services at Parliament House in Canberra, as a fitting tribute to a powerful advocate and learned academic who worked tirelessly to improve the rights of people with disabilities.

The Prize donated by Telstra, will be offered for the best article on disability for the Telecommunications Journal of Australia.

Associate Professor Christopher Newell, passed away in June 2008 but left behind a legacy of books, articles and conference papers on disability and telecommunications accessibility.

He was highly respected by the disability movement as well as industry and government, challenging peoples’ established views.
