Ladies in red hats grow older outrageously

Australia has joined a movement for women over the age of 60 – the Red Hat Society – who wear red hats, purple clothes and behave ‘outrageously’.

Based on the poem Warning, by Jenny Hall, which details how she will live as an old woman (eg “I shall spend my pension on brandy and gloves”- as well as the red and purple fashion colours).

The movement began 10 years ago in the US and women meet ‘getting together, doing things and growing old outrageously’. The society exists on over 30 countries, with 225 Australian chapters.

Younger women – under the age of 50 – can join but wear a pink hat and lavender garb. They are known as ‘pink hatters’.
