During old age or retirement, the engagement of the brain is said to become less active.
A recent study gives the example of a business executive who has kept the brain under stress for more than 50 years of managing people and processes in an airline company and now, after having retired, only has to think about a few things.
The study found that the drop in activities for the brain is what often leads to dementia and also contributes to suicidal tendencies. This is why there is an urgent need to think of ways to keep the brain busy and therefore have a healthy mind.
According to the study’s researchers, while Alzheimer’s disease can be caused by bacterial infections, the initial environment that allows such an easy attack of the disease is caused by lack of exercises for the brain or mind.
Reading a newspaper or magazine daily, playing board games or puzzles, and learning new skills or a language are just some activities which can keep a person’s mind active after retirement.
Below are some other exercises which could be beneficial during a person’s retirement:
- Keep your lifestyle the same. For instance, if you always worked between 8am and 5pm, you need to find some activities that you can do at these same hours. The activities you choose may not be done in eight continuous hours but can be varied every other two hours or less, depending on your ability to concentrate.
- Travelling is a good way to stimulate your mind especially when you are visiting places that you have never visited before.
- Watching over your assets and building capital is another good way of keeping a mind active.
- Becoming part of a fitness program, such as a golf club, dancing or yoga class, could be helpful.
The study concluded that keeping a healthy mind is as important as keeping a healthy physical body.
