In the mood at 50?

An Australian online community for discussion on better sexual health in people aged over 50 was launched recently. The initiative was developed by the founders of Evergreen, a consultancy that specialises in ageing.

The Facebook page, titled In the Mood at 50, is designed to encourage more open discussion on the joys of sex or issues with sex, whether you’re in your 50s or 90s, living at home or in aged care, heterosexual or gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or intersex, and abled or disabled.

The initiative was developed after Evergreen had listened to baby boomers and seniors in focus groups saying they were tired of being ignored by marketers, especially when it came to sex and relationships.

Brett McCann, Impotence Australia chief executive, says it’s refreshing to have an organisation spearheading the value and importance of sexual relationships for older people.

“Sex doesn’t have to stop when you’re 50. In fact, our specialist sexual health doctors are seeing a steady increase in older patients wanting more information on having a rewarding and satisfied sex life with no age limit,” Mr McCann says.

As we age, health and relationships remain important but are often complicated by life changing events such as health scares (for example, issues with prostate, impotence, diabetes and general libido), retirement or perhaps a change in relationship status.

Even the same ‘sexual positions’ which were once used may no longer be so easily accessible. To assist, a fact sheet called ‘Positions for Comfy Sex’ has also been developed and is free to download from Impotence Australia or In the Mood Store.
