Ian Kiernan wins the NSW Seniors First Golden Oldie Award
Ian Kiernan, founder of Clean Up Australia, has emerged as the most popular senior citizen as voted by the seniors of New South Wales.
With a clear majority of votes, Mr Kiernan received more than double the votes of the next most popular nominee, Richie Benaud. Bob Rogers, Bert Newton & Col Joye completed the top five.
The vote for Mr Kiernan and Clean Up Australia dispels the myth that seniors are not interested in the environment. Indeed, the results indicate they are more interested in it than sport and entertainment.
The nominees for the Golden Oldie Award were public figures nominated by the Seniors First team. Aged 65 and over, each nominee has made a significant contribution to the community in a range of fields including entertainment, sport and politics.
Of the prime ministers nominated, John Howard finished highest in seventh place, just ahead of Gough Whitlam in ninth place.
