Heart Foundation SA is appealing for more big hearted volunteers in South Australia to take part in its annual Big Heart Appeal next month.

The charity hopes to recruit a strong army of 13,100 South Australian supporters to knock on doors in their neighbourhood throughout September, to help raise more than $500,000 to fight against heart disease, the number one killer of South Australian men and women.

Adelaide resident, Lynette Russell, took up the call to doorknock last year and urges other South Australians to join.

Ms Russell’s decision to take part was inspired by her mother and younger brother. Her mother died 12 years ago from aspiration pneumonia caused by an enlarged heart and Ms Russell’s brother suffered a cardiopulmonary arrest at just 48.

“So many of us have seen the effects of heart disease among family and friends, and I feel very strongly about creating awareness.  I am especially passionate about helping Australians understand that heart disease can affect anyone and individuals may not even be aware that they are at risk of heart disease,” Ms Russell said.

Wendy Keech, Heart Foundation SA chief executive, said: “As a charity, we rely on the generosity of bighearted Australians and corporate sponsors to continue the fight against heart disease.

“We’re looking for big hearted volunteers who can spare a few hours during September to knock on doors and help raise much needed funds to fight heart disease.

“Most people don’t realise it, but heart disease is the number one cause of death in Australia, killing one person every 24 minutes.”

The Foundation aims to raise $500,000 across the state to help save lives and make world class research possible.

“To reach this goal, we need to recruit more volunteers in every suburb across Australia so please register for our Big Heart Appeal today – it’s a simple and rewarding way to help save lives from heart disease,” Ms Keech said.
