Nurses will be allowed to discharge patients from hospital in South Australia in a bid to get people home as soon as possible.
The Flinders Medical Centre pilot program may mean some patients won't need to wait for a doctor to sign off on their case.
“Nurses and allied health professionals, as well as other doctors, will be able discharge these patients who meet all the specified criteria,” South Australian Health Minister, John Hill, announced last week.
He said earlier discharge will help patients return home sooner and improve hospital capacity by freeing up more beds and creating more efficient health services.
The pilot program is scheduled for early next year.
