Home grown bone cloning
Victorian doctors have used revolutionary adult stem cell technology to grow a new bone needed to repair a man’s broken leg. Adult stem cell technology is legal in Australia.
A trial at Royal Melbourne Hospital – using stem cells from a man with a broken leg – split a sub group of his stem cells, called mesenchymal precursor cells, to grow them in a laboratory. They were then implanted into the man’s leg where they successfully regenerated and the hole in his leg has been filled with new bone.
Another nine patients with fractures are also having the adult stem cell trial at the hospital, and the hospital’s Orthopaedics director, Richard de Steiger said the result was good news for the patient and for others with severe fractures.
