High blood pressure and dementia linked
Both high blood pressure and high cholesterol can influence the onset of dementia, according to research to be presented at the 3rd International Conference on Healthy Ageing and Longevity in Melbourne today, Friday, 13 October.
The executive director of Alzheimer’s Australia Vic, Ms Lynette Moore, said that “many Australians know that keeping the brain active, a healthy diet, and regular exercise can help reduce their risk of dementia”.
“However, according to research carried out by Stollznow Research Pty.Ltd in 2004 nearly 80% of Australians are unaware that high blood pressure and high cholesterol can put them at risk of the (dementia) condition.”
Ms Moore is a keynote speaker at the Melbourne conference which runs from Friday October 13 through to Sunday, October 15. Her presentation is titled ‘Impact on Dementia: Mind your Mind’ and will cover the impact of dementia worldwide and emphasise the benefits of lifestyle strategies aimed at dementia risk reduction.
Today at the conference Australian football legend Ron Barassi will host a special session with a group of 100 years plus aged Australians who will talk about the enormous changes in lifestyle over many decades.
