The Victorian Department of Human Services (DHS) has released a Heatwave Planning Guide – Development of heatwave plans in local councils in Victoria.
In January 2009, Victoria experienced 3 consecutive days above 43 degrees and reported 374 associated deaths.
This planning guide is the result of the funding of 13 pilot projects over 22 Councils during 2008, to develop and implement heatwave plans into existing municipal plans. It addresses the processes for associated risks at a community level.
This will be a useful document for the aged care sector when considering similar policies. The guide is available at http://www.health.vic.gov.au
