Heating the home shouldn’t lead to fires

NRMA Insurance is urging all households to be fire ready when winter officially begins this week, after it revealed the cold season last year brought an average of five home fires a day in NSW.

Research commissioned by the insurer has revealed that although 95% of NSW households now have smoke alarms, most can still do a lot more to help ensure the safety of lives and property.

Key findings included:
• Only 40% of NSW homes have a fire extinguisher;
• Less than one third (31%) have a fire blanket; and
• Forty five percent do not have an escape plan in the event of a fire.
