Heartburn drugs increase risk of bone fractures
Heartburn drugs could increase the risk of weaker bones and fractures in people aged over 50, a US study of 145,000 English patients with an average age of 77 has found.
Patients who used heartburn drugs for more than a year had a 44% higher risk of hip fracture than non-users.
The longer the drugs had been taken, the higher the risk, especially high doses for more than a year. These people were two and a half times more likely to suffer a hip fracture.
The study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
