GPs want Commonwealth Government to run hospitals
In the lead-up to the federal election an overwhelming majority (71.5%) of GPs would like to see the Commonwealth take over running state hospitals, according to a survey undertaken by the Australian Medical Observer magazine.
The results of the survey of 151 GPs conducted by Cegedim Strategic Data was no revelation to Rural Doctors’ Association of Australia president, Dr Peter Rischbieth.
He said the current health system was a “dog’s breakfast” and needed an overhaul to address duplication of services, education and training, and the “significant under-spending” on health in rural Australia.
