Govt Nation Building and Jobs Plan could help seniors

The Federal Government has announced its $42 billion Nation Building and Jobs Plan to support jobs and kick start the economy.

According to the Government, any worker, pensioner or self-funded retiree who paid tax in 2007-08, after taking into account available tax offsets and credits, will be eligible for the following bonus: $950 bonus will be paid to eligible taxpayers with a taxable income of up to and including $80,000; $650 bonus will paid to eligible taxpayers with taxable incomes exceeding $80,000 and up to $90,000; and $300 bonus will be paid to eligible taxpayers with incomes exceeding $90,000 up to and including $100,000.
 
Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin, said that would mean around 290,000 older Australians, self-funded retirees and part pensioners can expect to benefit.

The Australian Tax Office will automatically determine eligiblity for the payment based on 2007-2008 tax returns. More information is also available at http://www.ato.gov.au/.
