Govt-created “silver industry” to help elderly stay employable
The Singapore government is looking at creating a “silver industry” where older Singaporeans will be encouraged to work as long as they can.
Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong said the government was looking into the possibility of encouraging a “silver industry” – that means getting those older people to work for as long as possible. “We will try and create an environment where older people would be encouraged to work and employers would want to make use of their services.”
Mr Goh said that that the government had been reviewing issues concerning the elderly as Singapore was facing an ageing population. By 2030, 20% of Singapore’s population would be 65 years and older and the government was looking at ways to encourage them to stay active through work.
