Good practice, good business information

Posted

The Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission (HREOC) has developed a range of information and resources entitled Good Practice, Good Business to assist employers to create a workplace that is free from discrimination and harassment.

HREOC points out that although companies of less than 100 are now exempt from unfair dismissal laws under the Government’s new WorkChoices legislation, all businesses, regardless of their size, must still adhere to federal and state equal opportunity laws.

Anti-discrimination laws cover discrimination based on sex, pregnancy, marital status or family responsibilities, race, colour, national origin, ethnic origin or descent, actual or imputed disability, physical, intellectual and psychiatric disability, and work related injury.
Employees, including casuals, probationers, contract workers, commission agents, part time and/or full time, can make a complaint to HREOC if they feel they have been discriminated against.
HREOC will investigate and conciliate complaints in an impartial manner – it does not act as an advocate or legal representative for either party. The complaint information and complaint handling service is free.
