Good honey can help cure the worst germs
Honey can not only sweeten the breakfast toast, it is also effective in killing off germs that cause infections and may even help to knock off pimples.
University of Sydney microbiologist Dr Shona Blair’s research work over the past decade has shown that even concentrations of just 5% of honey can kill off dangerous golden staph including the so-called ‘super bug’ varieties.
Dr Blair said that “with some strains that are floating around in hospitals they are resistant to every single drug we’ve got. This is one of the big roles that honey can play through being just as effective against super bugs as it is against ordinary germs”.
The research has also found that honey can kill off bacteria that causes tetanus, wound botulism, and scar-forming acne.
“For acne or sunburn or nappy rash you can’t walk around covered in honey all day but you can mix one-third honey with two-thirds base cream like a moisturizer,” Dr Blair said.
However, Dr Blair has warned against people just dipping fingers in their kitchen honey jar for treatment.
“They should go to their chemist and buy some good honey and use it in the right way in the right circumstances,” she said.
