The celebration was a huge hit with all 120 guests according to Village Manager Debbie Dean.

“It was terrific. All the residents had a wonderful time,” she says. “Many have rung me since to say what a great night it was!”

Ms Dean, who is famed for her incredible social events, organised a joyous evening filled with laughter, food and music. A task was made easier by a team of helpful residents, who decorated the venue, filled lolly bags and moved furniture.

“The residents are really great, they support all my functions and events and really get into the spirit of things,” Ms Dean says. “It’s a testament to how much everyone loves Glengowrie and how proud they are to live here.”

Since it was first established in 1994, on the site of the former Glengowrie High School, the village has been home to hundreds of residents and has touched the lives of countless staff.

Among them is Chris Henry, the village’s first manager, who returned to give a touching speech and to catch up with some old friends. She was particularly pleased to see some of the village’s first ever residents, Don and Joan Tennessee, enjoying the festivities.

Mr Tennessee, who moved into the village in September 1994, says that he and Joan are “still here and still enjoying it”. For them, the village community is what makes Glengowrie Retirement Village so special.

“They’re a friendly lot and the help you get is unreal. Anything you need isn’t a problem,” he says. “We’ve had a ball!”

The strong community spirit was on clear display throughout the event. “It’s a wonderful village,” Ms Dean says, “and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. Looking forward to the next 21 years!”
