Health authorities are urging seniors to take advantage of this year’s flu vaccine program in the lead up to the winter flu season.
People over 65 years are particularly susceptible to influenza, but this year’s flu vaccine provides protection against three strains of influenza, including H3N2, the strain found circulating in the northern hemisphere.
In Western Australia, Communicable Disease Control Director Dr Paul Armstrong said the federally funded vaccine would offer protection against the strains circulating in the northern hemisphere in 2012.
“Getting vaccinated early, during the autumn, will give your body plenty of time to build up immunity before the flu season begins,” Dr Armstrong said.
