Gallstone risk for men rises with weight loss then gain
Losing weight then putting it back on could increase a man’s risk of gallstones. US research looked at 24,729 men and their weight history between 1988 and 1992, classifying them as ‘weight maintainers’ (remaining within 2 kgs of their initial weight), ‘weight cyclers’ and ‘severe cyclers’(losing more than 9 kgs with each weight loss attempt). They were then monitored over the next 10 years for gallstones.
Of the 1,222 cases of gallstones, most were in the weight cyclers, with the severe cyclers 42% more likely to develop gallstones than those who maintained their weight.
