Queensland aged care receives $20 million upgrade
A Queensland aged care facility will receive a $20 million upgrade over the next four years, adding 100 new residential aged care beds, including a 44 bed specialist unit.
Plans for PresCare’s Rockhampton’s Alexandra Gardens aged care facility will also include the development of about 60 independent living unit that will provide additional accommodation for the elderly at the end of the staged development.
PresCare is now in its final discussions with its preferred supplier to extend the existing facility in North Rockhampton.
Greg Skelton, PresCare chief executive, says the expansion reflects the organisation’s commitment to the Rockhampton region.
He adds it will also help provide new facilities for a growing over 65 population in the city.
“In the next 20 years, Rockhampton’s population will increase by more than 14%, with the over 65 age group making up the largest proportion of this growth – about 20% of the local population,” Mr Skelton says.
“As our population ages and seniors make up a greater proportion of our communities, PresCare is ensuring we fulfil our mission to care for older Queenslanders by increasing the reach and breadth of services,” he says.
The first stage addition of 80 beds to the main residential care facility is expected to be complete by September next year. Further development will be staged over the following three years to 2018.
PresCare has been helping older Queenslanders in the Rockhampton area for more than 50 years. It provides in home care through community care service, 40 housing rental units and Alexandra Gardfens – 94 bed residential aged care facility.
