Fresh approach to dealing with dementia

John Killick challenges the myths surrounding dementia and presents a fresh perspective on the condition in his new book, Dementia Positive.

John Killick challenges the myths surrounding dementia and presents a fresh perspective on the condition in his new book, Dementia Positive.

He also offers practical advice on communication and shares his experiences of relating to people with dementia, whilst also highlighting uplifting stories focusing on the positive, rather than the negative.

In contemporary society, dementia comes attached to a lot of media-generated negative stigma. Despite being a condition that affects a large number of people directly or indirectly, it remains highly misunderstood.

Having worked in the field for more than 20 years, author and poet Mr Killick has produced a practical guide for the supporters of people with dementia.

Concentrating on communication and relationships, Mr Killick’s approach is pragmatic without being over simplistic about the condition and its effects, and focuses on a more enlightened view of individualised support.

Dementia Positive dismisses the idea that life ends after diagnosis, and offers an encouraging message of understanding and hope.

Mr Killick is visiting Australia in November and December to hold a series of dementia communication workshops in Sydney, Canberra and Wollongong.
