Free health seminar at Garvan
Australia has one of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the world, with around 90 Australians losing their lives as a result of this cancer every week. Prostate cancer affects approximately one in 11 men over the age of 50. Both of these cancers are age related, and family history is a key risk factor. This seminar will provide an insight into the prevalence of these diseases, the risk factors involved, and how Garvan’s research is helping to fight these cancers.
This free seminar will be held on Tuesday, 6 May 10am-12:00pm in the NAB Auditorium, Garvan Institute of Medical Research, 384 Victoria St, Darlinghurst. To book phone (02) 9295 8110 or visit www.garvan.org.au
As part of its ongoing commitment to increasing public knowledge of health and medical research, Garvan holds an annual series of free public seminars. The next, on Osteoporosis, will be held 7 August.
The Garvan Institute of Medical Research was founded in 1963. Initially a research department of St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, it is now one of Australia’s largest medical research institutions with about 400 scientists, students and support staff.
Garvan’s main research programs are cancer, diabetes and obesity, arthritis and immunology, osteoporosis, and neuroscience.
