Free health information sessions for seniors’ groups in NSW
NSW Seniors Peer Education Centre (NSW SPEC) provide free information sessions to seniors’ groups, clubs and services.
The sessions cover a range of health and well being topics of direct relevance to people over the age of 50, and their carers.
Sessions cover managing medications safely, making an informed choice between brand and generic medicines, understanding depression, falls prevention, and insomnia.
Each session lasts between 45 minutes and one hour, apart from generic medicines. This one lasts about 15 minutes and can be tagged onto any other of the sessions on request.
Each session is accompanied by free, high quality handouts. The sessions are presented by fully trained volunteers, themselves aged 50 and over.
Peer education is an excellent model for getting a health promotion message across, and is most easily explained as ‘health information for seniors by seniors’.
At least three weeks’ notice of session requests is required for metropolitan Sydney, to give time to find a volunteer available to cover the date.
Session requests outside the metropolitan area require a longer period of notice.
Increasing number of requests are being received from seniors’ groups from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds. SPEC is keen to develop this area of work.
Please refer to the volunteering section of their website for more information.
