Free door-to-door bus service for disadvantaged in NT
A free door-to-door shuttle bus service for the sick and elderly to get to their medical appointments will start in the coming months.
Northern Territory (NT) Minister for Transport, Gerry McCarthy, said a tender for the service from Palmerston is now open after a 12 month trial of the service.
“This service will provide Territorians in need with a helping hand to get to their appointments and medical treatments,” Mr McCarthy said.
“The bus service will run from Monday to Friday between Palmerston and medical facilities including the Royal Darwin Hospital, Palmerston Super Clinic and selected medical facilities in the Tiwi area.”
The service is expected to travel to the hospital to arrive at about 9.30 am, 12.30 pm and 3.30 pm, and return from the hospital at 10am, 1 pm and 4 pm to cover the morning and afternoon clinics.
“The new wheelchair–friendly bus will improve transport access for these commuters, increasing their mobility and independence.
“The bus will have distinctive signage and people who need the service can phone and book ahead of their appointments.
“We’re committed to providing affordable and sustainable public transport – the Territory is the only jurisdiction with free public transport for seniors, pensioners and students,” Mr McCarthy said.
Tenders close on 27 April 2011. It is anticipated the contract for the bus service will commence in June 2011.
