For-profit aged care industry group attacks Minister for Ageing
Rod Young, the head of Aged Care Association Australia (ACAA), which represents the for-profit aged care providers, has written to the Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot, and the Prime Minister, criticising the Minister’s ‘constant criticism’ of nursing homes.
The letter has been sent to The Australian newspaper which has reported on its contents, and the response of the Minister.
ACAA has accused Mrs Elliot of misrepresenting various reports and statistics to fuel an ‘opportunistic’ anti-industry media campaign, much of it based on ‘a complete lack of understanding’ of the industry.
“This industry is becoming extremely tired and frustrated at what can only be described as constant criticism of aged care providers”, Mr Young writes in the letter.
“The negative attitude from your office regarding any apparent opportunity to portray the industry as operating poorly is very disappointing.”
The Minister told The Australian that she would not take a backward step on the welfare of nursing home residents and financial accountability.
