As the warmer months approach, the NSW Rural Fire Service is offering a free one-off service to assist infirm, disabled and elderly residents to live more comfortably and safely in their own homes, located in bushfire-prone areas.
The Assist Infirm Disabled and Elderly Residents (AIDER) Program is offered to vulnerable people who have limited domestic support available from family, relatives, friends or other services.
AIDER coordinator, Tony Jarrett, told DPS News while a number of groups may face difficulties during disasters such as fires or floods, the aged and people with disabilities might not “fair as well”.
Some of the work that can be carried out under the program includes: clearing gutters, thinning vegetation, removing leaf and tree debris, trimming branches from around, and overhanging the home, and mowing or slashing long grass.
