Facility offers ‘uncompromising commitment’ to dementia care

The Salvation Army’s Macquarie Lodge Aged Care Facility in Arncliffe has taken an innovative approach to dementia care through its recently introduced “Uncompromising Commitment”, a new model of care that fosters self worth and value by giving residents more choice about their day-to-day activities.

“Just being able to have a sleep-in if they feel like it; not being woken up for breakfast and taking meal times at their leisure are just some aspects of the program that gives our dementia unit residents a new level of respect,” says The Salvation Army Aged Care Plus chief executive officer, Sharon Callister.

The new model of care also aims to develop closer relationships between residents, staff and family by having a consistent roster and linking certain staff members to particular residents.

“This ‘buddy’ style system gives our dementia residents the ability to really get to know and trust their primary carer,” says Ms Callister.

“This familiarity reduces the level of stress and bewilderment of people living with dementia, fostering a sense of belonging and community.”

The Salvation Army’s Macquarie Lodge was rebuilt and re-opened earlier this year. Its facilities include a purpose built dementia unit with an outdoor courtyard designed by dementia care experts to stimulate memories.
