Exercise keeps grandma and grandpa strong
Grandparents should be encouraged to be positively active rather than told to take it easy to remain in healthy muscle condition.
Being inactive can lead to more falls because muscles and bones can become weaker and smaller if not used over time.
Susie Dinan, a senior research fellow at the University of Derby, UK, has warned that “not being active can do more harm than we realise. Our muscles are complex and dynamic but if they are not used they become smaller in size and the effect is similar for bones”.
Ms Dinan said that older people should be encouraged to remain active because “exercise can keep muscles strong and supple and also maintain stamina and bone density”.
