Exercise helps keep pain – and doctor- at bay for women
Women in their 70’s can postpone the onset of arthritis by as long as three years if they exercise as little as 75 minutes a week.
A study has shown that elderly women can avoid stiff or painful joints by moving them, an improvement not observed in middle-aged women. Seventeen percent of the population suffers from some form of arthritis, making it as prevalent as heart disease.
University of Qld researchers reported on a three year study of women in exercise, and said that if women in their 70’s undertook as little as 75 minutes of moderate physical activity a week, they would lessen their chances of developing frequent arthritis symptoms for three years.
Engaging in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week may be even more protective.
