Eva’s a ‘brain’ champion
Queenslander student, Eva Wang, has been named the state’s brain champion at The University of Queensland’s Queensland Brain Institute competition.

Competing in a field of 145 gifted students across Queensland, Eva (pictured) was awarded the winner of the state finals of the prestigious Australian Brain Bee Challenge (ABBC).
Jing Yi Xu from Brisbane State High School finished in second place followed by Shazura Lawrence from Caboolture State High School.
In the quest to be Queensland’s Brain Bee Challenge champion, competitors took part in a brain teasing team challenge and neuroscience quiz to test their knowledge of the brain and how it works.
The full day competition was complemented with an impressive speaking program featuring Nobel Prize winner and Laureate Professor Peter Doherty, Dr Chelsea Bond from UQ’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Studies Unit, and 2012 ABBC Champion Jackson Huang.
Eva will go on to compete in the Australian Brain Bee Challenge National Final, being held in Adelaide next January at the Australasian Neuroscience Society Annual Scientific Conference.
ABBC is the country’s only neuroscience competition for high school students.
The competition is designed to test school students’ knowledge about a range of topics, including intelligence, memory, emotions, sleep, Alzheimer’s disease and stroke.
About 5,500 students from 305 schools across Australia and New Zealand took part in the first round of this year’s competition and state and territory finals will be held this month across Australia.
