Electoral Commission organises mobile voting in nursing homes

Voting in the 2007 Federal election will be brought directly to residents in hospitals and nursing homes around Australia in the lead up to, and on election day on Saturday 24 November.

The Electoral Commissioner, Ian Campbell, said that across Australia, around 444 mobile polling teams from the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) would be visiting selected hospitals and nursing homes.

“These teams provide a personal voting service to electors who are unable to leave their beds or their immediate location.”

Mobile polling teams started visiting selected hospitals and nursing homes in the five days prior to election day and will continue until election day.

At some locations the mobile polling only occurs on election day.

Mr Campbell said that mobile polling, organised with the assistance of hospital and nursing home administrators, is just one way the AEC is working to ensure every eligible elector has the opportunity to fully participate in the 2007 Federal election.
