Elderly forced into urban ghettos
Australia risked creating urban ghettos of aged pensioners as the elderly sought financial refuge in the poorest sections of our cities, according to University of Queensland senior lecturer in social policy, Dr Paul Henman.
He said there was growing evidence that a disturbing number of elderly were reaching pensionable age without owning their own home.
He said the drift of sole parents to cheaper rental areas lacking essential services could soon be mirrored by pensioners forced to live not only far from essential services but from family as well.
