Drop-in home support for Queenslanders
Queensland people with a disability and needing someone to ‘drop in’ during the day to provide assistance will benefit from a new $2.5 million Drop-In Support project by the state government.
Disability Services Minister, Annastacia Palaszczuk, said the funding would allow 140 people with a disability to remain living in their own homes, with flexible drop-in support.
“Flexible drop-in support services, for some individuals, may be all that is required to ensure they can safely live in their own home,” Ms Palaszczuk said.
The state-wide rollout follows the success of “drop in support” services in the Brisbane area over the past six years.
“Perhaps someone needs help showering in the morning, making their dinner in the evening, or help turning over in bed during the night. They can request when they’d like someone to drop-in to provide this support.
“This gives people with a disability the independence to remain living in their own home.”
Ms Palaszczuk said the project aimed to increase the role of non-government service providers to address the need for flexible, drop-in support services for people with a disability by extending their operating hours and client base.
“There really is nothing like waking up in your own home – it’s generally where we feel safe and happiest,” she said.
Ms Palaszczuk said “We’ve been providing over $500,000 in funding each year for this program because we know that people with a disability who continue to live in their own communities can have improved quality of life and reduced social isolation.”
